NEWTON TOWNSHIP MINUTES 3-11-2014

Newton Township Trustees met in regular session on Tuesday, March 11, 2014. 

Mollie Crooks, candidate for Muskingum County Commissioner, Muskingum County Commissioner Jim Porter, Muskingum County Commissioner Jerry Lavy, Mark Yeagle, Rodney Crooks, visitors.  John Phillips, Norm Gill, Bob Mock and Sherry Ziemer, Township residents; Larry Taylor, Road Maintenance Supervisor; Larry Geiger, Craig Knox, Chief Allen Deaver, Fire Department; James R. Smith, Robert Stephenson, and Charles R. Elson, Township Trustees; Derek J. Dozer, Township Fiscal Officer.

Meeting was called to order by Trustee Smith at 7:02pm.

Pledge to the flag was led by James R. Smith.

Agenda was approved as read.

Minutes were approved as presented.

Public Participation:

Norm Gill – Appreciate what Trustee Stephenson did with logging trucks.  “Lower Kroft is gone.  Workman is gone.  Roads were not designed to handle the kind of loads that logging company ran on them.”  Mr. Gill said he appreciated what the Township has done with the resources available to keep up the roads.  He is requesting that repairs be made on the roads in his area later this year.

Mollie Crooks – Mollie is running for Muskingum County Commissioner and was here to ask for support in the upcoming election.  Mrs. Crooks gave out phamplets explaining her education, business experience and asked for any questions.  She said she is running on Honesty, Integrity, and Communication Skills that she brings to the table.

County Commissioner Jim Porter – Running for re-election and was here to ask for support with the upcoming election.  Commissioner Porter stated that he had 19 years in local government and referenced that the Commisioners supported the Townships with past and recent grants.  He asked for questions.

Fire Department Business

Knox reporting:

Runs – 16 Fire, and 52 EMS.

Josh Weaver – candidate for FF will be coming in.  Mr. Weaver is a State Trooper.

Will be taking Engine to Wisconsin for repairs.

Will be looking at Life Boats and a possible “Geezer Squeezer” at FDIC.

Deaver reporting:

-          Asked for questions and gave spec book out on tanker truck.

-          Lights ordered for gym and bays, Bulbs were cheaper than expected.

-          Medic 1082 has leak in air suspension.

-          Looking at driveway really need to have a plan to fix it.

-          Received EMS charter.  Can now train Fire & EMS, there is a current waiting list of 95+ people who want into our program.

-          ISO has been visiting more local departments.

-          Generator was having issues so having it looked at.  Gunk in fuel tank was biggest problem.

-          Fire on Moxadarla Drive (twice) and Fire Marshall was called in to look at it.

-          Turnout gear is on budget and will start ordering some of it shortly.

-          Knox and Cosgrave went to Rhode Island to deliver gifts and money for boy with Lukemia.

 Road Report

Larry Taylor

-          All tires now on grader.

-          Patching hard last couple weeks.  8-9 tons of cold mix.

o   ½ ton used on Thorn to be billed to Maysville Regional for reimbursement.

-          Tile in White Cottage is broken, could be substantial costing and time in fixing due to location.

-          Ford Rd. is repaired.

-          Took cherry tree down on Yost.

-          There was a major sink hole on Landerman’s property and the Township was called.  State was there but didn’t help with fencing off the area nor cost for materials.

Old Business

Smith – None.

Elson – None.

Stephenson – PT employee Wells started and is doing well.   He will be making $11 per hour and will be used to patch holes and mow as needed.

Stephenson – None.

Stephenson – Nothing further.

Fiscal Officer reports:

·         Presented payment registers, fund status reports, bank reconciliation, grass roots clippings.

All bills presented were deemed to be valid expenditures and were to be paid as presented.

Next regular meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, April 8th , 2014 at 7:00pm at the Fire Department.
